Stonewall Fall Burn

By General Member Drew Meadows
November 11, 2014

On October 25, Stonewall Jackson Volunteer Fire Department conducted the company’s annual Fall Live Burn. Apparatus were mobilized at 0645, and all members met at the Prince William Public Safety Academy by 0730. During the training that lasted from 0800 to 1700, Stonewall crews responded to a total of five simulated structure fire calls. Crews swiftly knocked down the fires and rapidly performed multiple saves, some through windows and down ladders. In all, 18 firefighters and 7 EMS personnel participated in training.

Every fall, Stonewall conducts live fire training to hone skills and practice fire ground roles. This year, members practiced search, rescue, and fire suppression operations. Scenarios included various building simulations, from apartment buildings to single family homes. Each scenario posed different challenges, with fires or victims located in alternating areas of the burn building.

After each training evolution, the officers, firefighters, and other members circled up and talked over their performance, providing an opportunity to learn from both mistakes and successes. The live fire training allowed members to train at full speed, build muscle memory, and face the reality of making mistakes—all in a controlled environment. Everyone appreciated the positive attitude and hard work that defined the day, and Company 11 eagerly anticipates the next live fire training event.
