The Thursday night crew responded to a report of an injury from a fall out of a third story window during the early hours of January 31, 2014. Engine 511 arrived on-scene to find a bleeding, conscious 23-year-old woman lying on the frozen ground. While PWC police officers interviewed a potential witness, Firefighter/EMTs from the Engine crew manually stabilized the patient's cervical spine and began rendering medical care. Advanced Life Support EMS providers from Medic 511 and additional EMTs from Ambulance 511 arrived very shortly thereafter to immobilize the patient on a long backboard and quickly move her to Medic 511 for a thorough patient assessment.
Medic 511 requested a helicopter for rapid transport to a trauma center. Engine 511 setup a landing zone for helicopter AirCare 3 in an open field at nearby Stonewall Middle School. Within 15 minutes, a flight nurse and flight paramedic from the helicopter crew assumed patient care in the rear of Medic 511. Minutes later, helicopter AirCare 3 began their flight to INOVA Fairfax Hospital with one patient on board.
